University High School

Waco, TX

Architect: PBK Architects
Contractor: Bartlett Cocke

Completed in 2011, the $69 million, 275,000 square foot University High School replaced its aging counterpart in Waco. The two-story high school has a student capacity of 2000 and features two classroom wings, an auditorium, competition gymnasium, two auxiliary gymnasiums, a culinary institute and multiple sports fields.

The site consisted of a deep layer of highly expansive clay, warranting the use of a structurally isolated two-way flat plate foundation system with full crawl space.

The superstructure is structural steel with concentrically spaced vertical braced frames.
